I'm looking to backup my target database having connected to the recovery catalog. Both my databases are in my local machine. kris is the database where my recovery catalog is located. summer is my target database. This is the transcript of events.
C:>rman catalog rman/rman@kris
Recovery Manager: Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production
RMAN-06008: connected to recovery catalog database
RMAN> connect target
RMAN-06005: connected to target database: SUMMER (DBID=2912805942)
RMAN> backup database;

Why am i not able to backup my database?

Look at $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/demo/case*.rcv on the database server.

Did u allocate a channel for backing up the database.
