I installed oracle8.1.6 on linux7.2. i created the database also.my database name is test.and it has made all the files of all the tablespaces.when i start my svrmgrl or sqlplus then it asks for the password.when i give the password then it gives the following error.
what can be reason plz write me in detail.
ORA-12545:connect failed because target host or object does not exists.
i created a password file by orapwd named testpwd and did not mention any user name in that.can it be a reason.this same error is given when i start sqlplus and after entring the username.
plz tell me in detail ]]

typically, the error says oracle database/instance is not available or NOT understood by oracle. or the host_string/serviceName is that u might have given is wrong.
pls furnish more details about ur logon etc.
check your tnsnames.ora file
