If you are receiving a prompt for a password then your shell account is not a member of the group DBA. Check with your Senior DBA or your Unix Admin...

The password may be the same as the Oracle account 'sys'. This appears to be the default.

An alternative route to execute system privileges would be to grant your own Oracle acocunt SYSDBA privilege.

Hope this is useful, Richard - Cardiff, UK.
