When I run sql loader from the command line it inserts all records successfully but it just hangs.
I get no errors but then I have to exit out of the command line to stop it.

Are you running from a client machine or a server. Check the free RAM in both the cases

im not very sure,
Make sure your ORACLE_SID env variable is set and
try to run sqlldr from the server.
so that you can invoke sqlldr traditionally like

$sqlldr scott/tiger control=loaddemo.ctl data=emp.dat
