Hello

when I attempt to login through SQLPLUS I get
TNS-12560 Protocol adapter error, then
TNS-00102 Key Binding value error.

There is not much on the net regarding this issue..
except that this could indicate a shortage of memory..
I have 192mg RAM on my home machine??? (64 + 128 added).

Is there some other probable cause for this error?

try these.
1. set LOCAL=service_name environment variable in Control Panel
2. and make sure you dont have any entries for
BEQUETH PROTOCOL in tnsnames.ora

thanks Mahesh

I did set up a service name with BEQ Protocol in the tnsnames.ora...this is a local database not
a network database that is why I set up IPC and
BEQ protocols in the tnsnames.ora
If this is incorrect then please correct me.

one more thing you mention:
"set LOCAL=service_name environment variable in Control
Panel"...can you explain further this is windows 98 OS.

for a local database (database and client in the same machine)you no need any tnsnames.ora entries at all!.
u can directly connect as
userName/passWord.

if you intend to use connectStrings, ie..

usernNane/passWord@connectString

then onlly u need to use protocols (tcp/ip or bequeth)
if you use bequeth make sure the system u are using suports it.

thanks a heap for your input...I understand
what you are saying about no need for tnsnames.ora
if it is a local connection however why does Oracle
require service_name to connect to the personal 8i local database using tnsnames.ora
with connection parameters local=yes..protocol=beq..
host=localhost...etc..etc.

That is how I was setting up this new local database.
