solaris/linux and other flavours of unix are more used than windows as operating system for enterprise servers..so they should fetch more value. you will see the need of unix admin basics for all dba ads..

knowing other databases like sql server helps a lot too..

I think you should go with whatever you are comfortable with. If you are enthusiastic about a topic, you will perform better for your employer. It's a wrong approach to just blindly go wherever the money is. You have your MCDBA so you should be familiar with SQL Server. That's an extra edge you have. But it is true that most DBAs need to know some basic UNIX administration and scripting.

Combination as in food pairing? Smile
Just kidding.
Above rhetoric has been technically catechized many times.
Without getting too much deep,
Sun Solaris is 'preferred' only because they are 'solid' (I use a Sun blade as my PC. It is atleast 6 months ago that i did a reboot) and Sun Support is usually very very good.
http://www.oracle.com/corporate/press/2005_nov/solaris10.html

Sun Solaris is also not 'preferred' because
* hardware is very pricey and support contract is even pricier.
* Some even call it slowaris (slow, when compared with the newer OS)

It even seems Oracle Corporation itself advocates for Linux.
For more information, please dig up the works by Wim Coekaerts / Werner Puschitz.
But, you claim

So Solaris,HP-UX or whatever does not really matter. You can easily learn other flavours. If you are looking only certifications, it is upto you.
