Pls any one who knows the following

Where are the definitions for basic account types (Assets, Liability, etc.) done. These are the qualifiers associated with natural a/c's while defining them in value sets/flex fields. My reason for asking is can one change or add to these particular "name" definitions if so where.

Thanks.

Talk to one of your Accounting Users for an explanation of what the different types of account are and what they are used for.

There are two elements to consider:
LOOKUP_CODE (1 character)
DESCRIPTION (many characters)

As for adding to or changing these, I would recommend great caution because the usage of the LOOKUP_CODE is embedded in the logic of the entire General Ledger system. If you were to add a new value of your own that the system was not aware of, it would probably cause major problems at year end. The actual value (LOOKUP_CODE) held against each account is a single character, and these are translated into "user-friendly" DESCRIPTIONs in the user's own language using the table FND_LOOKUP_VALUES, with VIEW_APPLICATION_ID = 101 and LOOKUP_TYPE = 'ACCOUNT TYPE' and ENABLED_FLAG = 'Y' and LANGUAGE = <user's language>. You could experiment with changing the DESCRIPTION (but not the LOOKUP_CODE) in a TEST environment and see if that meets your requirements. Hopefully this will not have repercussions elsewhere, but you will have to test very thoroughly (including performing a year end with amounts posted to your accounts) before you can be reasonably confident.

Cool HTH
