I currently have a primary database sending archive logs to the standby DB on a separate machine. The database is configured to use 'Maximum Performance'.
To sum up, the machine that the Standby database works from stopped working. Very soon after, the primary database stopped working also.

I believe that in the above mode, the if all of the standby servers become unavailable, processing will continue on the primary database.

Can anyone advise why the primary database may have failed in this case.

hmmm... did you get anything from the alert log? one possibility is that the archive destination for the backup database is required and since the primary db was not able to send the logs to the backup it stopped processing anything else. But better check out the alert log first.

Did you put "MANDATORY" with SERVICE option in log_archive_dest_2 ?

The value should be "OPTIONAL".

If it is mandatory, then even if the standby database host is down, the primray database will try to send archive logs
to the standby destination.
