I have followed these steps:

Shutdown immediate
startup mount pfile='C:oracleadminemppfileinit.ora'

Alter database archivelog
Alter database open
Shutdown immediate

Took O/S backup

edited init.ora paramters to reflect the following:
log_archive_start=true
log_archive_dest_1="location=c:oracleoradataemparchive"
log_archive_format=%%ORACLE_SID%%T%TS%S.ARC

When I tried reopening the database I received the following message
ORA--00439 -feature not enabled: managed-Standby

Can someone please help me with this? I am running Windows 2000 professional on a compaq laptop.

everything looks ok in the process, but instead try entering log_archive_dest_1='c:xxxx' ie. remove location in the parameter. This way you can get it done and also write log_archive_start=true after you specify the archiving destination.
